Summary

This report investigates the third life of our used cars in Africa: the impossible marriage alliance between business, recycling and environment. With the announced death of diesel, the pressure on new car prices and the high costs of labor and parts for old vehicles, many Swiss drivers regularly replace their cars, to the delight of an aggressive marketing industry. Swiss used cars enjoy an unparalleled reputation in export markets. In West Africa, the Lebanese reign supreme on the business of used car that are trans-shipped through the port of Antwerp to African ports. Togo has become the main gateway, boosting an already fast-growing specialized economy that benefits many. But as Switzerland, just like most other European countries, are proud to drive clean, green activists point to the negative environmental impact of these end-of-life vehicles.
