Being A Jihadist
How and why does one become a jihadist? When exactly does one cross over the tipping point and fall into horror territory? How can a terrorist deny the humanity of those he is about to kill? In September 2020, a radicalized man stabbed to death a Portuguese young man n a kebab reataurant in Morges, Switzerland. He said he wanted to avenge the Prophet. Last January, a convert of Bosnian origin nicknamed "the Emir" was sentenced in Paris to 15 years in prison for terrorism. Through the court hearings of the two jihadists, this documentary film brings together lawyers, terrorism experts and psychiatrists to understand how one can commit terrorist acts or plan acts of terror in great details. The portrait of jihadists that emerges is that of a psychologically fragile and immature convert, spending most of his time on the Internet rather than in a mosque. To them, jihadism provides an opportunity to restore a broken self image and forge a destiny where the desire for purity and horror mix in a disturbing way.
