Exposure To Chemicals, Drinking Water Hazards
How to manage and clean up the toxic dumps and polluted industrial sites that threaten the quality of our drinking water? The river Rhone waters flowing from Alpine glaciers at above 2,000 metres is not as pure as you would think. The Lonza chemical industry located upstream has stored for decades its polluting residues in landfills along the river. The Gamsenried dump corresponds to 40 soccer fields of waste, or 1,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools. Nearby, groundwater contains benzidine, a dangerous carcinogen. The cost of cleaning up these time bombs is huge. Dioxin is also found in the bodies of nearby farmers. Does it make sense to leave it up to companies to control their own pollution levels?
