Tibet Or Not Tibet: The High-Stakes Succession of the Dalai Lama
The Dalai Lama, an iconic figure of the Tibetan struggle, has celebrated his 90th birthday last July, raising concerns about his succession. We went to Tibet and interviewed Penpa Tsering of Tibetan government-in-exile, who thinks China seeks to influence the Dalai Lama's succession process, threatening the future of Tibetan resistance and culture. Tibetans in exile fear that Beijing may appoint its own Dalai Lama, as was the case with the Panchen Lama, in order to better control Tibetan activists. The Tibetan government-in-exile hopes for support from Western countries to recognize not China' s chosen successor but the one chosen according to Tibetan Buddhist tradition.
