Built On Shadows: Construction's Undocumented Workforce
Undocumented workers, particularly from Kosovo, make up a large portion of the construction industry workforce. Subcontractors claim they have no choice but to hire them, given the cut-throat pricing in the market. Cantonal authorities are fighting with one hand tied behind their back—they lack the resources to effectively monitor and penalize companies that slip through the net by declaring bankruptcy. For undocumented workers, it's a matter of survival: most come from Kosovo, Serbia, or former Yugoslavia, where working conditions are even worse.
