Finance & Greenwashing
Our journalists investigate the greenwashing passion of the financial world. Today, sustainable portfolios are found everywhere on financial markets. But what lies behind our bankers’ green promises of a better world? Most ESG funds are actually connected to not-so-green companies, some of which are amongst the most polluting in the world.Take for instance the Belgian giant Umicore, spearhead of ESG funds, that for nearly 40 years has been denying the contamination and toxicity of the soil around its former mines in the Cévennes region of France. Or the Majid Al Futtaim Group, a Dubai-based holding company promoted by Swiss private banker Lombard Odier, while the indoor ski slopes and the penguins in its huge shopping malls in the Middle East are a far cry from a greener world. Or DWS, the German asset management subsidiary of Deutsche Bank, who fired whisleblower Desiree Fixler for denouncing their greenwashing. This report shot in Egypt, Switzerland, France and Belgium takes us into the troubles waters of green finance.
