Rags To Ruin: The Lethal Cost of Fast Fashion In Ghana

Watch Video
PDF

Ghana has become a global dumpster for fast fashion's cast-offs. The turnstile for Africa's secondhand clothing trade, the port of Accra ingests a staggering 11 million pounds of discarded garments from around the world every single week. The very same threads we toss into charity bins across Europe. These mystery bundles get auctioned off blind to Accra's vendors. Some 60% are sold at local markets. But the dregs wind up in the overflowing landfills of Accra's Old Fadama slum. Non-profit Plastic Punch tries to clean the area but most of that waste is being burned by residents slowly poisoning themselves on toxic fumes.
