Running away from home or foster care leave indelible marks in the emotional and family lives of youth. For teens, it is alwas a cry for help. For their parents, anguish gives way to misunderstanding. For the response of judicial authorities varies greatly from one country to another. In Belgium, the Dutroux case has made runaways a national concern. But elsewhere, as in Switzerland, reporting runaways is not systematic. Yet female runaways, usually younger than males, are exposed to real dangers: drugs, alcohol and high-risk sex or forms of emotional dependence that can lead them into prostitution. Fiona, Diana, Tim and the others open up about their journeys as runaways. And about the huge impact running away had on their lives.
