Tree Of Life: Ticino's Chestnut Legacy

Watch Video
PDF
Chestnut trees, sometimes monumental giants standing the test of time for centuries, bear witness to rural life of paramount importance in Ticino, Switzerland. The chestnut was the bread and butter of the local diet. Roasted, boiled, or ground into flour, it was consumed day in, day out. The entire population pitched in during harvest season, while every part of the tree was put to good use—leaves as fodder, wood as fuel or building material, and the fruit as a food reserve. Left to their own devices for several decades, these trees are now once again respected and tended by die-hard enthusiasts.
