Opera vs. War, Kharkiv's Underground Resistance

Watch Video
PDF

Three years after Russia started the invasion of Ukraine, we went behind the scenes at Kharkiv's opera house, a symbol of cultural resistance in Ukraine. Artists and crew daily struggle to preserve their art and humanity in the face of war. In the opera's basements, Sofia, a dancer separated from her son, Anna, a pregnant costume maker, and Ivan, a musician facing conscription, work tirelessly to keep rehearsals and shows going. Despite daily air raid alerts, shelling, and their upended family lives, they have dug in their heels to resist the invaders. Each of them embodies a fragment of hope and extraordinary resilience. Like them, hundreds of artists put it all on the line, defying the bombs to keep Ukraine's cultural flame burning against the darkness of war.
