What came to be known as the 'Monks' Revolution' ended up in a violent crackdown behind closed doors. At the root of the crisis were the Burmese exiles of the Democratic Voice of Burma, based in Oslo, Norway, backed by the Burmese opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Aung San Suu Kyi. On the border between Myanmar and Thailand, we managed to get the lowdown from the first wave of exiles. Many of them are monks who, through peaceful means but at a steep price, succeeded in rocking the boat of one of the world's most brutal juntas."
