Chasselas, The Grapes Of Kings
The Chasselas was the delight of the Ottoman sultans' table. On that of François 1st, Chasselas bunches crowned sumptuous meals. Chasselas has long fuelled stories and legends. In this documentary film, scientists, historians and winegrowers reveal the origin of this emblematic grape variety from the vineyards of French-speaking Switzerland. From Constantinople to the vine arbour of the King in Fontainebleau, along the banks of the Loire, exploring Burgundy and other French vineyards, the mystery of chasselas is revealed to the rhythm of the epic. Never before had a camera approached a grape so close, never had a grape variety been so examined by genetics. From the seed to the great vintage, from the infinitely small to universal geography, have a look at the history of chasselas as you have never seen it before.
