The Trail

This road movie follows Fribourg-born artist André Sugnaux on his journey to visit the remnants of Kolyma's gulags, 10'000 km east of Moscow. With Lena, his young interpreter from Saint-Petersburg, they follow the Trail, a 2000-km road built by the forced labourers of the camps and that leads to the goldmines. They meet former convicts, prison guards and people who are simply trying to keep the memories of the region alive. This journey also bring us face-to-face with today's Russia: the State that relentlessly exploits these mines, but is disinvested from the rest of society, the hardships suffered by the Ukrainians, Byelorussians and Uzbeks
forced to work thousands of kilometers away from home, the distorting nostalgia of the communist era, the young who leave for the next city, some 2000 km away, dreaming of a better life in the West. The Trail is a film about the memory of people, and the memory of a region. Available as a 75' or 52' version.
