Plastic Recycling, A Murky Industry
Our journalists report on the true environmental impact of the plastics recycling industry lying behind the greenwashing of mass market retailers. Late 2018, China stopped importing plastic waste from around the world to recycle its residues as fuel. Since then, most waste from European countries ends up in Indonesia, as shipping it there is much cheaper than recycling waste in Europe. In Java’s Surabaya port, the smuggling of thousands of tons of illegally imported plastics hidden in paper containers gives work to local communities drowned in the toxic fumes of non-recyclable plastic residues.
